The Matriarch & Patriarch
of the Extended Kaufman Family
Sarah Moiseevna (born Rapoport) and Arieh Yehuda Leib Faibishovich Kaufman shown here with grandson Moisey around 1900.
Sarah and Leib had 10 children between 1863 and 1893. Leib was previously married to Stisya and they had 3 children together.
Sarah and Leib lived on a small farm in the town of Zapesochnoe in the southeast corner of what is today Belarus near today's Ukrainian border
At the time all of this area was
considered Southwestern Russia.
The Kaufman Farm

The Kaufman farm was part of the Targonsky settlement.
According to a current Targonsky resident, the Kaufman farm, which was destroyed in WWII, had:
- a big house,
- a “gumno” (гумно)
[which is a barn-like building with a clear threshing floor to prepare flour to make bread] - a “laŭka” (лаўка)
[small commercial store] - a bakery and
- lots of domestic animals
